Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he loved taking part in numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he would play extensive hours and don’t win most times. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he possibly could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and concentrate more on poker.
The actual improvement in his game happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would regularly play against each other. Howard had access into several of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard would hone his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. She was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
