NL Hold’em Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker player in the world by most of the top pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandfather taught Phil penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to discover every little thing he could about the game. Phil would tell his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not permit the negative comments from others destroy his goal of being one of the greatest poker players in the world.
He began playing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first number of years for him were a learning opportunity and coming away with a win was not a common outcome at the time. He became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he defeated quite a few of the better known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and an immeasurable love for poker. He states that he’s picking up skills every day and is quite abashed about his achievements. Phil admits to making mistakes every single session of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Even though Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a normal basis.
